ACS developed the “Conversations Series” as part of our mission of advocacy on behalf of the Howard County non-profit community to give our members the opportunity to meet with County officials to discuss issues and legislation that may impact our membership and those they serve.

We are pleased to announce that we have added a new Conversation with the Board of Education of Howard County (BOE) to the series this year.

The mission of the BOE of Howard County is to provide leadership for excellence in teaching and learning by fostering a climate for deliberative change through policy and community engagement.  According to their website, the BOE, with the advice of the Superintendent, sets goals and expectations for the Howard County Public School System (HCPSS) through the creation, revision, and adoption of policies. These policies guide the development and implementation of educational programs and the management of system operations. Board policies are aligned with the HCPSS mission and goals, as well as applicable federal, state, and local laws. The Board believes that sound policy decisions require the consideration of employee recommendations and community input.

In general, all school boards have three major responsibilities: developing the annual budget to run the school system; setting school policies; and hiring and evaluating the superintendent. At a time when school board members across the country are facing unprecedented challenges, it's important to know what our local school board does and how to get involved.
